Whether you want to optimize standard products or launch a new collection, HCM is ready to help you accomplish your goals. We offer a simple, streamlined way to receive high-quality wood components that are made in the USA. Once you send us your technical drawings and specifications, we’ll provide a sample item and generate a quote for you to review.
We can make adjustments as necessary. We are committed to providing high-quality solutions that meet your deadline and budget requirements. We prioritize quality and keep you informed every step of the way. Explore how our process works, from start to finish.
1. Lumber Selection and Drying
At HCM, we value our long-lasting relationships with reputable sawmills in the United States. We buy the finest U.S.-sourced dry lumber, ready for use. Sometimes we purchase green or wet materials that require a kiln-drying lumber process. We stack “sticks” between the layers of lumber so heat can reach every piece in our kiln.
2. Wood Milling and Machining
Once the lumber has been “sticked” and dried, we send the rough materials through our rough mill. A rip saw cuts wood parallel to the grain, which results in pieces that are the correct width. A moulder planes and cuts the wood to create precise side profiles.
From there, the boards feed through an Opticut saw. This machine scans for knots and other defective parts to cut the boards at an optimized length.
3. Wood Component Manufacturing
The heart of our wood manufacturing process begins with feeding the boards into moulders. These specialized machines shape the top, bottom and both sides of a board simultaneously. While each project varies, this production often involves creating round dowels.
Some projects don’t require moulders — we have a selection of other customized machines that can cut and shape the wooden pieces instead. For example, we use standard Computer Numerical Control (CNC) routers to produce non-moulded shaped products, such as stool legs and firework plugs.
4. Secondary Manufacturing Process
After using specialized machines or turning the pieces into the correct profile with moulders, we use a customer’s specific blueprints and exact dimensions to bring the wood component’s tailored design to life. Our skilled expertise and state-of-the-art equipment give us a wide range of capabilities. We can:
- Chop the piece into shorter lengths.
- Cut a wooden thread into the dowel.
- Install a hanger bolt or metal thread tip.
- Dome the end of a dowel.
- Taper or tenon the piece.
5. Wood Finishing Process
As desired, we can run the pieces through a finisher and apply a clear or colored finish. We have a selection of paint options that we can use upon request.
